I live in an apartment close to the railway line and wake up to - TopicsExpress

I live in an apartment close to the railway line and wake up to the blaring of the train engine every morning. The sights and sounds experienced during a train journey is something I dig for. I don’t know but for some reason trains have always evoked myriad emotions in me. Perhaps it has to do with my childhood. When I was kid growing up in Mumbai, summer holidays is what I used to look forward to. The excitement at the thought of spending two days and two nights in a train en route to my native place in Kerala couldn’t be equated to anything else. Mom used to pack food in plantain leaves shown over fire. This would lend a distinct flavour to the food, and the aroma emanating from the packet was an instant appetizer ! It was fun to eat in the train sharing food with other families around. We found kids in the same coach to play with, and for the time spent during the journey we all became one big family!!! The hawkers in the train would bring an assortment of eatables which was an instant hit! I would eagerly expect dad to buy me the choicest of goodies and bug him no end! The desolate landscape of Andhra was scary and the train provided me with a sense of security and comfort. At night, the gentle rocking of the train along with the “percussion on the tracks” would lull me to sleep!! There was this incident when the train halted at some remote place (somewhere near Cudappah) after a goods train had derailed, and we all got down, and invaded an unattended mango orchard nearby. So fun and adventure was what a train journey was all about as a child! Till date, except for the hassle of using the toilet which has lot of interesting ” graffiti” from imaginative “artists” on the walls, there is no comparison to a train journey nor would there ever be!!!
