I live in one of the endemic areas of the US for plague. It is present in rodents and squirrels here. We have had predators die of the disease. The route of infection here can also include intermediary hosts such as wild mammals, urban rats and our pets. The infected flea from the wild rodents introduces the disease to a pet, or directly to the human. This disease, unlike Ebola is considered to be in the top ten diseases for physicians to watch for in their patients. The pneumonic form in Colorado is the first to be seen here since 1925. It was spread first to a domestic dog, as the intermediate vector. atsu.edu/faculty/chamberlain/Website/lectures/lecture/plague.htm
