I look at the world around, So many painful thoughts abound. The mistakes I’ve made, The people I’ve hurt, Each one a weight that rests on my shoulders. “I must bear the weight!” I cry. The weight is mine, but only two hands, have I. The weight! Oh the weight! It grows with each passing day! My knees break under the strain! The faces around me, so sad they seem. “Help me!” They seem to scream. I need to help the poor souls! So I reach out my hands, But the weight grows! Oh the weight! My hands fall under my own load. But I still see their faces, oh, my eyes do they goad. I must escape from this weight and pain I see! But I cannot move, oh, my broken knees. Only one alternative is left to me. It sits on my shoulder and tempts me weak. “I am Death, and I can deliver what you seek.” “How can you help me, you wretched little thing? My weight is mine alone to bear! Nor is it in your power to blind me.” Death gives a little chuckle, a flap of his scaly wing. “True words, but I can do a little something.” “I can release you from this hard existence. It would be the easiest way and is my specialty. So come, submit to me, and be free.” “This weight grows heavy with each pained face I see. Death, you have made your case, now free me!” I lay my head down to receive what I demanded, And hear a wicked chuckle from its bony chest. A claw wraps around my throat and squeezes. My vision blurs, and my eyes close, as I brace myself for the end. But I feel a release, I turn my head, wondering what this might portend. A hand grips Death’s throat and a voice rings out. A face an inch from the little lizard’s nose, “This one is mine! His price has been paid!” And with that, he hurled the wretched thing away. Flipped and whirled it did, cursing all the way. The face turned to me, and I saw a Man. “That one is not to see you yet.” He smiled. “I still have plans for you.” “Why have you done this thing? My only chance at freedom has taken wing!” His eyes twinkled. “Has it?” He said. He tapped my weight. “This isn’t yours anymore. All your debts are accounted for.” I wondered at what He meant. But as I thought, something changed. Something was different. “Your weight is gone. Get up. Little one, I have emptied your cup.” I noticed it then. The weight was gone. My knees were strong. I stood up and laughed. I couldn’t help it, the lightness made me daft. The Man smiled at me. “It’s good to see you happy.” But I saw the look in His eyes. On His back, my burden and others there lay. There was no telling how much it all must weigh. He noticed my stare and smiled again. Blood beaded on His head like sweat, And even more dripped from His hands. “Worry not little one. The price is paid. For others and you, was the sacrifice made.” “One thing I must ask of you, little one.” I could only stare at the Man. His face seemed to shine, but He continued. “Go and alleviate the torture from your eyes. Tell others, to their burdens, they must say goodbyes.” “The price was paid for them as well. But I want you to tell them. Be the evidence of what has been done.” I turned and still saw the pain around me, But my hands! They were free! I turned to thank the Man, But He was gone. I looked around and went to work. I tell you, because of that Man, I am not dead and I am a part of His plan!
