I lost a dear friend Wednesday evening. She was one of the strongest people Ive ever known. She lost her son after nursing him back to health following a devastating shooting that probably should have killed him instantly. But he survived. Until a year later, when he suddenly died. Val was overcome with grief. Some may have thought this was a sign of weakness, not me. She and I would talk. Wed talk for hours. This not only helped her but helped me. As the years went by she began to forgive herself for letting her guard down. Realizing she had done everything and more that any of us mothers would have done for our child. She started to live again. Then cancer struck. It would be easy to give in, as a mother who as lost a child, and prepare to meet your child in heaven but Val fought. She fought for her dad, her daughter and her grandson but mostly because she just wanted to live. She never gave up the fight. She always kept me laughing despite her pain. I know shes with Eric and her dad and is at peace and free from pain. For that I am grateful but I sure will miss our chats. RIP Val. I love you.
