I love door knocking. Its a privilege to be able to talk with my neighbours, to hear what frustrates them and what makes them hopeful for the future in this remarkable province we call home. Yesterday was special. I knocked on a door and got talking with an older couple, Marilyn and Eric. After a good conversation, Marilyn said; Well, I did vote Liberal last time. I told her what I tell all Liberals; that I used to be a Liberal but I didnt feel the party had a future in Alberta and that The Alberta Party is a better fit for our optimistic, can-do province. Before any Liberals out there jump on me, read on. I told her my late grandmother, whos name was Alberta Clark, ran for the provincial Liberals in Calgary in 1952, so I came by my past Liberalism naturally. She said Alberta Clark was your grandmother? Yes, I said. She reached behind her and pulled a small, framed, intricately made needlepoint off the wall. Your grandmother made this for me in 1969. She handed it to me. Written on the back was: Handcrafted by Alberta Clark for Marilyn Leslie. Spring 1969. Winning an election is important, because I truly believe the future of our province depends on the outcome in Calgary Elbow. But the journey is just as important. This interaction is something I will never forget, and will treasure for the rest of my days.
