I love learning and do so everyday... Yesterday I learned a big lesson about River Coal... Several historians and river advocates contacted me with documents evidencing commercial River Coal mining on not only the Susquehanna and its tributaries but also on two rivers in the Delaware basin, the Schuylkill and the Lehigh. Both river basins house deposits of Anthricite Coal. Though those did not produce the quantities due to the size, terrain, and navigability of the rivers there were commercial ventures that were quite productive. Over 250,000 tons were harvested in just one year from the Schuylkill. The Lehigh produced over 120,000 in 1919. The Susquehanna’s reclaiming efforts, which produced approximately 1.9mil tons in 1919, covered a much greater area. Thanks to VanWagnerMusic for the river dredge picture.
