I love the Kwasi Enin story from so many aspects. First, a black kid getting into all 8 Ivy League schools is inspirational for many other kids of color; Secondly, he is the child of immigrants, who got his PUBLIC education in a modestly-funded suburban school system. Third, he credited his love of music--a favorite target of know-nothing budget cutters--and his PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS. (Take that Eva Moskowitz and John Arnold!) Fourth, his parents work as nurses and have devoted their lives to service of others, not ripping off millions by gaming Wall Street. AND, Fifth, he wants to be a physician... Hollywood could not have cast a better role-model to serve as a perfect counterpoint to a culture of narcissism, greed and profit. As a former Associate Dean at SUNY StonyBrook Medical Center, I am so proud of this kid I want to burst! I hope my former colleague and soul mate Al Jordan, who gave me a copy of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, is still around to savor this moment!
