I love the New York Marathon. One of my first, fondest and earliest memories of NY was being in an elevator in a hotel and seeing all of the proud medal wearers. But now, it never fails to remind me of one of my favorite Sandy stories (apologies if youve heard this before)- After many days without power and making sure that the people in our building were alright, I brought my dog to meet up with my then wife in a hotel near Times Square to get a shower and some rest. On the way through the lobby, I and my (absolutely bullshit averse dog) saw Donald Trump holding court with a bunch of marathoners, essentially trashing the mayor for not holding the marathon the same weekend when so many people were homeless, without power, without water, etc. I have no idea to what level my Labrador had mastered the intricacies of the English language but her sense of smell was relatively well developed. Upon the delivery of Mr. Trumps opening remarks, she completed an objection of such physical and olfactory precision that I remain in awe of her eloquence. Said objection was laid quite close to the feet of the imperious speaker. Though she may have unchained herself of these earthly bonds, the timeliness and eloquence of her exclamation still leave me jealous for their appropriateness and timing. ....and thats my favorite marathon story.
