I love you all and want your thoughts. I want to know about your - TopicsExpress

I love you all and want your thoughts. I want to know about your year--not, please, in the form of lists (or shared lists) because those are selling points and never address anything but that, but the messiness, complexity, inscrutability; the difficulty to render sufficiently. I know youve lost and won this year, as have I: Ive seen you thrilled, Ive seen you silent and despairing. Ive seen you disproportionally angry and Ive seen you elated. Death, loss, birth, gain, unburdening, growth, regress, loneliness, abundance: I want to know. Ive had a great time and it has been the great time to share it with you. That is not an algorithm; that is meant. To those Ive met, I look forward to getting to know you more; to those I lost or offended, I am sad to see you go and probably think about you more than you imagine. I learned a lot this year, the lessons were not always easy or quick. I hope to learn more next year. By way of resolutions, I want (and need your help) to let things go more easily, the things that encumber: the unwon accolades, the career setbacks, the disagreements, the offenses not meant as such, the snark and irony that stands in for genuine sadness, the dead weight I carry. I wont strive for lightness, but for lighter-ness. I want to work better, be a better father, husband, be a better friend, person, artist, thinker, contributor, colleague, advocate and standard bearer. I want to pick you up when you need it, and I want to feel safe to ask the same of you. I want our differences to open my eyes to you rather than ossify the scales already there; I want our similarities to not reflect me and my choices but you and yours. It has been a pleasure knowing you. Heres to us.
