I loved this article. When friend and frequent visitor Zane Groshelle told me that our home reminded him of an auberge, he paid me the highest compliment. When I first experienced the international cross-roads of visiting friends and friends of friends at Russ Kleins Cambridge haven at the foot of Porter Hill, I knew that I had found at last the kind of home I could live in. A communal table with newspapers, and books, delicious foods, and glasses of drink, culturally conversant strangers and old friends with tales of curious things, funny things, political things, or of last nights assignation. I remember opening a kitchen drawer looking for a fork and instead found a cooperative bank of lira, pesetas, yen, pound, francs, marks, and more... there in the spirit of take a book, leave a book. Years later, I would make the Austin version of that place and fill it with friends and family, food, and music. I borrowed from my mentor Sandy Stone the tradition of encouraging, self-tendered performances of poetry, song, dance, and storytelling. Actually, I can think of no better secular substitute for giving thanks than when a friend offers up a performance. So why this Sunday morning ramble into the spirit of homey and friendly things? This article on the spirit of the bistro spoke to me. Just a few days ago, Chris Whit Ewen and I acknowledged our mutual love of Chez Nous and its international clientele, and for me its because theres something about a table at a good French bistro that feels like the community table in my home at the cross-roads of interesting friends coming and going to interesting places.
