I made fried green tomatoes for the first time today. I didnt have a recipe, but really they are fairly simple to make so I just went with it. They turned out pretty good for my first attempt and no plan. Lol. Ok heres the recipe. 3 large hard green tomatoes 2 eggs 1 or 2 cups of milk (I didnt measure) 2 cups of all purpose flour (again didnt measure) 1 container Italian seasoned bread crumbs Enough oil to cover the bottom of your pan about a half inch high or so. Salt and pepper to taste along with garlic or other spices you prefer (keep in mind the bread crumbs are seasoned) Wash tomatoes and make sure they are totally dry. Have three good size bowls on hand as well as two plates. In the first bowl add your flour, in the second add your milk and eggs and mix, and in your third add bread crumbs. Core and slice your tomatoes about a quarter inch thick. Turn your stove on to medium heat and place your pan with oil in it to heat while you bread your tomatoes. Start with the flour and dredge on both sides. Move it to the egg wash and repeat. Finally finish with your bread crumbs making sure both sides are fully and evenly covered. I would bread enough at first while my oil is heating to fit in the pan and then bread more as your first batch is frying. Let the tomatoes fry until they are a nice golden brown (about two minutes). Flip them and let them fry about another two minutes. Have a plate ready lined with paper towels and another paper towel to cover with. Repeat the process until all of your tomatoes are done. If you have a favorite ranch dressing its great to dip them in. I am also going to include a great horseradish dipping sauce below this thats great with these, and just about anything else. 1/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice A pinch of cayenne pepper or paprika In a bowl add your sour cream, horseradish, lemon juice, and any seasoning you prefer and mix till well blended. Refrigerate for about two hours or until cool. If youre in a hurry throw it in the freezer for a while. Once cool dip and enjoy!
