I made it home yesterday, and I’m still enjoying Jerry Springer - TopicsExpress

I made it home yesterday, and I’m still enjoying Jerry Springer -- all good signs. It was only 9 days ago that I was in the OR and on a heart-lung machine; it’s remarkable how resilient the body can be. Recovery was mostly uneventful, with the time just spent trying to get stronger. The only setback I had was the nerves that coordinate the beat in the lower chambers of the heart failed to re-establish themselves, and as a result I had to have a pacemaker installed. At first, I considered that to be a significant setback, but then my sister reminded my that two friends, both of whom may be reading these words, also had pacemakers. Knowing how well they are doing, and no longer feeling like I was a black sheep, the acceptance of the pacemaker was much easier. Mark and Eric never realized the positive influence they were having on me a few days ago, just by living their stories -- thanks to both of you. I intended to go to a rehab facility for a week or so. HA! I lasted less than 15 hours. Sorry, but I’m not ready for a rest home. I pictured myself in a circle of 20 other patients as we batted a beach ball back and forth to each other as part of our physical exercise. Steve Penland, the macho dude from Montana who still lifts weights for exercise and who will walk 10 miles carry camera equipment to get a single photograph? No way. My sister has provided just the amount of support I need. I think we all want to retain our sense of independence and not be a burden to others, and I’m no different. She gives me a gentle reminder, suggestion, or push just when I need it, and also all of the space that I want. It is so appreciated. Now I have only one objective: walk. Walk to regain strength, walk to regain stamina, and walk to be able to do other activities in the near future. It sure is beautiful outside, and I so enjoy it. Steve P.
