I met Paul Costanzi my freshman year in college, in a general computer class we had to take. I learned quickly just how special he was. A true family man, putting everyone elses needs far before his. We got married a year after graduation. Lived it up in the city for a number of years and did some traveling before settling down in Elmwood Park. My hometown quickly became his. We were blessed with an amazing daughter. How he loved his little girl. Simona was his world. He worked so hard, even through his battles with cancer. After two major operations, the cancer came back and spread to both lungs. Nine straight weeks of chemo. Yet, he never complained. He spent his 8 hr days there cheering up other patients...making them laugh. His disease was aggressive. He wasnt supposed to make it, but he did. The years that followed were good ones, spent with his best friend, Simona. They were inseparable, always ganging up to tease me about something. He loved being around all the kids. Family dinners. Watching a movie on the couch. Nothing special, so long as we were together. In recent years, his struggles with depression and diabetes made life harder, but he kept pushing through...for Simona. He was so very proud of the young woman she has become. Turning 16. Watching her drive away for the first time. Getting her first job. So many firsts. So many lasting, beautiful memories. Pauls heart may have stopped on Sunday night, but ours still beats strong for him.
