I met a girl who recently got married (not one of our brides) and we were talking about photography and weddings. She mentioned how much she loved her photos and how happy she was with their photographer. I dont always hear happy wedding photography stories like this, so I was really happy to hear that. She kept gushing over her pictures and then followed that with a bunch of my friends are just getting engaged and Im keeping my photographer all to myself. Im not telling any of my friends about them. They are my photographer. Im not sure what my face looked like at this point and maybe Im wrong for feeling like this, but I think that is one of the most incredibly selfish things Ive ever heard anyone say. I actually said back to her, its obvious you loved your photographers and the memories they captured for you. Why wouldnt you want to tell everyone in the world about them? Its the ultimate thank you and its a sign of support. I dont know your photographers but Im pretty sure that this is their livelihood and the way they pay the bills. Who knows, they may have little mouths to feed too. If they did a great service to you, why would you not want to make sure that they continue doing what they love and refer them. (I know for us referrals are about 80% of our business). I mean really, shes afraid that if her friends work with her photographer that their pictures will be exactly the same. Many different factors go into documenting a wedding. Weve been doing this for 7 years and no two weddings ever photographed the same. No two couples ever looked exactly alike. There is a ZERO percent chance that any of her friends weddings would photograph like hers. Different couple, different style, different wedding! Its not the same. I am actually frustration for this photographer. It seems to me that they did a great job for this couple. Brides, please dont be a seedless watermelon. If you loved your wedding vendors, you should refer them. Plant the seeds so they can grow some more and continue doing what they love :) Am I wrong for feeling this way?
