I met a guy at our workshop yesterday who said to me, “Braimoh Bello, do you remember me?” I replied, “I am sorry, I do not.” He explained how, about four years ago, he was having problems with his studies (engineering) and felt like quitting and changing his course. He said we met, sat in the car and talked for a while. I advised him not to give up easily, saying that it is natural to want to change our course of study when we are not performing well. Then I asked him how it went. He beamed and said, “I did not change and I am doing my final year. Thank you Braimoh” Morale of the story: 1. In life, when we fail, we are quick to blame other people and things, but rarely ourselves. We blame the university, the lecturer, racism, the course of study, etc. But success begins when we take responsibility. 2. When you need help, do call for help. Do not die in pain or shame because of pride. Talk to a classmate, a colleague, your mentor or anyone who inspires you. But please make sure it is someone you trust, especially those who have gone ahead of you and not those who have failed and given up. 3. It is ok to change a course or change businesses, but make sure you are changing not because you are failing. Make sure you are changing because deep down you always knew that the course or business was wrong for you. Maybe someone forced you to do it against your desire. But you will need to be honest with yourself. 4. No course at university is easy. Irrespective of the course you choose, you will need to know and practise the fundamental principles for success. And remember that if the grass looks greener on the other side, then the water bill is also probably higher there. 5. If you fight and run away, you will need to fight again soon. When faced with adversity, find determination to try and try again until you win.
