I must share the eloquent explanation written by a person on one - TopicsExpress

I must share the eloquent explanation written by a person on one of my "Liked" pages, because it conveys my perception quite well. His name is Douglas Dunn, and the following are his words: "The real issue is not more government or less government. It is good government handling legitimate matters of PUBLIC policy, but staying out of our PRIVATE lives and choices. Both PROgressives and CONservatives see a need for getting the government off our backs and a role for Big Intrusive Government (BIG) in other areas. We just don’t agree on where the government should meddle and where it does have a rightful role. CONservatives want the government to look the other way and give complete “freedom” to corporate elites to do whatever they want and run roughshod over the rights of workers, consumers or our shared environment and infrastructure, but they want Big Intrusive Government (BIG) to micromanage the most personal, intimate decisions in your private life. PROgressives do not want Big Intrusive Government to stick its public nose into private relationships (dictate who you can or can’t marry), private medical choices (reproduction, medical marijuana, end of life choices, stem cell therapies) and trying to force religion (private) into the public square (socialized religion), while PROs want to leave it as a private, personal matter with neither obstruction (at the private level) nor promotion. But PROgressives DO recognize a need for “we the people” to come together as “government” to address issues that affect the community as a whole, that we cannot address privately or as individuals: matters of emergency disaster response, infrastructure, public order (both PROactive [preventive] and reactive), and protecting the equality of opportunity for all citizens and protecting consumers, workers and our shared environment from threats both domestic (via law enforcement and both our criminal and civil judicial systems) or foreign (via our brave military heroes). Oh, and PUBLIC POLICY also includes PUBLIC health and safety, including health care as public policy, not for private corporations to profiteer off human suffering. CONservatives get the public/private dichotomy completely backwards. They want Big Intrusive Government to dictate control of private lives, while abdicating responsibility for many important issues of public policy." Douglas expressed it so accurately!
