I need more days like today - crummy weather and four hours of nothing better to do than to eat. Long overdue, I made my way to that once beloved Itaewon staple now relocated in Yeouido for a look at Chef Susumu’s latest venture OK Burger, located right next to his new OKitchen. If you’ve ever enjoyed his food, then yours was one of the many collective “NOOO’s” ringing out when the move was announced, but one look at his new restaurants and it quickly becomes clear why. Upon looking at the menu, I was immediately slapped by the paradox of choice. If only I were a cow…apart from the obvious therapy I’d need to cope with my newfound cannibalism, at least I’d have the stomach room for everything I wanted to eat. Today I “settled” for the Chili Cheese burger with added bacon, Lamb Scotch Egg, and Chicharrons. The Scotch egg sits atop a bed of Moroccan spiced carrot salad, which it complements perfectly since it’s made with lamb instead of beef, and the dressing also has a good hit of citrus in it making this a great way to start the meal. Not heavy at all. The chicharrons were well seasoned and make a good snack any time of the day…if only I had them at all hours… One thing needs to be made clear: this is not a “chili burger” in the sense that there’s no chili on it. Rather, the name refers to the chiles used to dress the burger. Thank god too because the burger is a beautiful thing to look at. Nicely toasted housemade bun, perfectly seasoned big beef patty (no shrinkage here), delicious pickled onions and grilled peppers, and brought together with a smoked ketchup. Salty, sweet, tangy, savory…what more do you need? My only negatives were the pickle geared towards Korean tastes, and the doneness of the burger, which despite the claim made on the menu wasn’t done medium…should have known better than to assume…so if you like your burger pink, be sure to ask. Prices are great: W7,000 to W10,000 for burgers with the exception of softshell crab (W15,000). Fries, an additional W2,000 extra. The total for my meal, including drink, W22,000…could have easily been much more and I’d have been fine paying it. Next time, I’ll definitely be bringing the little lady and dining at OKitchen proper. Through the glass at the entry you can’t miss the rows and rows of dry aging steaks and sausages. If only it were just a bit closer…
