I need to cheer myself up, so heres a story. I call it Filling a Church with Musicians. At the wedding I attended this weekend, both grooms are musicians. One sings, the other plays trumpet. This meant that over half of the church was filled with musicians they know from their respective groups. There was a lot of singing in the church service, including a few congregational songs. Now, its a church packed full, most are musically trained, but playing an instrument does not mean one can sing. In fact, we joke This is why we didnt join choir. During one of the congregational songs, everyone was singing. It sounded darn good, but most people were singing melody since its what everyone knows, and whats in the hymnal music. We heard a few attempting to harmonize, but not many. Then in the last song, on the very last chord, some tenor in the back of the church suddenly took the last note up a fifth (in other words, harmonized it) and just BELTED it out. There were chuckles, but one of the instrumentalists wasnt amused at this proud choir singer. Mutter: Smart ass. Hey, youre in a church! Oops! Uh... Smart mouth! Singer: I was filled with the Holy Spirit. Hes filled with spirits alright, but theyre the bottle kind. Like you should talk, DRUMMER! Ah yes.... musicians. We have our rivalries. Band versus choir is one of them.
