I need to comment on depression and suicide. First, suicide is never a wise or proper choice. Lets get that out of the way immediately. As one whos been to that edge, I believe that things can always get better. But theres more involved than just that, which is where I see some commenters missing the point. Because, second, a depressive episode is very different from simply feeling sad or going through a rough patch. A persons entire body chemistry changes, resulting in, among other things, a REDUCED ABILITY TO MAKE WISE CHOICES. Again, this is not despair or fear or any other emotion a person whose brain has always functioned normally can understand. Holding a clinically depressed person fully responsible for their choices (morally, I mean, not legally) is like blaming a legless person for not walking fast enough. Third, if you are really concerned about whether a persons death was their fault (this extends to cancer, diabetes, AIDS, heart disease, and other life-ending diseases as well) and think that a faultless death is more deserving of expressions of grief, then you have some growing up to do.
