I needed this reminder today. I live in an urban area of San Diego, allot of homeless folks wander our neighborhood. I was bummed to discover that the outdoor furniture on our front porch was missing its cushions this morning. My initial thought was that someone needed them to sleep on, of course, its cold at night right now. Im actually amazed they lasted nearly 3 years. My second thought was its not my fault that another person is homeless, dammit, those cushions belong to us and stealing is stealing. Shawns clients use that sofa and its a wonderful area to sit and watch the world go by. I was annoyed, resentful and pissed. But Ive moved into the next phase of thinking. We can replace the sofa with a sitting arrangement which isnt as appealing for theft. At the end of day, no matter how many things are stolen from my front porch, I have a warm home and a place to sleep each night. I am grateful.
