I neglected to include an important section in the spinal hygiene article below; here is the addition: When Money Really Is The Main Obstacle However, all the above said, financial challenges are a very real obstacle for a lot of people. There were times when skipping going out to eat, cutting out unnecessary spending on things like extra clothes or toys, and eliminating the cable TV was enough to help us afford the care we needed; but other times, those weren’t enough. We know what it’s like to not know how you’re going to buy food for your family or pay basic bills…to not know if you’ll be homeless next month. Obviously, you must juggle taking care of the basics with other health needs as best you can. In the past, many chiropractors took on financial hardship or scholarship cases where people who were genuinely committed to doing whatever it took to improve their health could still get this critical care even though they couldn’t afford the regular rates or discounted family rates. The bad news is that Obamacare and all the new policies make it very difficult to near impossible anymore for chiropractors to offer low-cost/no-cost care to those who are facing hard times both financially and with their health. Namely, Obamacare extends Medicare policies across the board. And every state has different laws about what chiropractors can charge as fair market value. Those two factors alone mean that if a chiropractor offered treatment for less than fair market value (say anywhere from $35 to $65 per adjustment), that would be considered enticement and unfair to competing chiropractors in the area who may not be able to afford giving treatment at that low cost, even on a selective basis to those who can prove hardship and commitment. On top of it, chiropractic is not covered well or at all by most insurance policies. The good news is that there are a few options. Your insurance may cover some preliminary visits. Some chiropractors may still take on hardship cases so it never hurts to ask the chiropractors in your area. Some chiropractors also donate their time and services to charitable places like homeless shelters and halfway houses. More VA hospitals are now staffing chiropractors and providing services. If you live near a chiropractic college, the colleges usually have clinics where qualified and supervised students can provide care for little to no cost. Most chiropractors still do offer payment options though so you can pay what you can afford to over time for just the basic adjustments until you can afford more advanced treatments. Most chiropractors do what they do because they want to see people healthier so they will work with you as long as they are legally able to. Just understand that they have families to feed too; whatever exception they make for you has to then be available to everyone else; and doing anything outside the law seriously risks their license, career, and all their families’ sacrifices so they can help people. In addition, while working out payments or finding low-cost options, don’t forget to find ways to increase your income. Easier said than done, I know. But, there are opportunities out there, even ones you can work from home with little to no experience as I have. You just have to weed out the scams and find the right projects that are worth your time. Often times, saving money is a lot easier than making it so keep Dave Ramsey’s financial principles in mind as you’re managing your finances, along with your health. auntlola.wordpress/2013/11/09/what-you-dont-know-about-your-spine-can-hurt-you/
