I never post much but this morning I have something to say. For the second time in a number of years someone has anonymously left us a note, telling us what terrible pet owners we are. How we leave our dog ( a Chesapeake Bay Retriever) outside in cold weather. Read up on the breed, please, and dont make judgement on the 30 to 60 sec you spend driving by every day. 1. He sleeps outside, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers often enjoy sleeping outdoors if it is cooler outside, as they prefer cool climates., dogbreedinfo/chesapeakebay.htm - When he comes in the house, he will start to pant within 5 minutes, yes he gets hot. - His coat is over 1.5 inches thick, with an inner layer of what resembles fine wool. - He has a dog house, and we have in the past put blankets and hay inside for his comfort. Every time he drug it out into the yard and slept there, I no, its unbelievable to you, but its true. 2. Hes a hunting breed, not a toy house dog. Many avid hunters keep their dogs kenneled, (yes in a cage) I know of two such dogs only a couple blocks away, dont forget to scold them. - Jake is allowed to run through out a large back yard. - He goes on runs with me several times a week. - and he is let out and follows me around when I do yard work. 3. He has been known to lay down in a puddle of water, in 28 degree weather! ( He did this while on a walk with me in the snow. Oh Water, yes we give him water, he drinks a lot, and often empties the bowl next to the fence. Thus we have a 5 gallon bucket that is also kept full, and a wading pool with pea gravel for him to cool off in in the summer. (For what ever reason he prefers drinking out of the wading pool most times). 4. And yes on extreme cold nights we do let him in the garage, and hes let out in the morning, so maybe, just maybe, you didnt notice. Hes also afraid of thunder, and is let in when a storm is approaching. How a bout next time confronting us face to face if you are so concerned, instead of leaving notes? How a bout being informed on the breed? Most animals have survived well before people started housing them, or am I missing something. He is not abused as you stated, but we have seen evidence that his past owners must have beat him, as he has cowered and ran from me when I have had a broom or shovel to do some work ( and I have never beat him with either). Yes he has a family and is loved, despite what you may think.
