I never read Bill James before - but as a teacher with some time off this past week - I borrowed a friends copy of Bill Jamess This Time Lets Not Eat the Bones - Bill James Without the Numbers - The Best of The Bill James Baseball abstract - I dont know why I avoided reading him before, but I now realize how irascible, sarcastic, sometimes downright mean, and often laugh out loud funny - I enjoyed the book immensely At one point in the book, he recommends that up and coming managers practice their craft by playing APBA as a way to improve their decision making - a great idea I thought - and I wonder if anyone ever took that advice I havent played APBA in years - I gave my game away to midwest nephews years ago - in fact, I hardly watch baseball (or football for that matter) at all anymore - life and family happily interfere with those pursuits - but to paraphrase Tommy Lasorda - when my wife complains that I love basketball more than her, I reply that I love her more than football and baseball - Im a big fan of the NBA and College Ball and coaching my kids team Its funny - I couldnt tell you more than 5 players on the Royals or Giants (Im a Yankee fan and their roster is an evolving mystery to me as well) but I can tell you the lineups of the 68 Tigers, 70 Orioles, 71 Pirates and the 27 Yankees and Pirates - I can still remember that if you roll a 16, you get a 28 (ground out to short) and 14 will fly me out to left field - its amazing what stays in ones mind 30+ years later My friend Michael Miller brought me into this group and its nice seeing how passionate so many of you are I love Rich Zawadzkis Tempests and Hitmen, etc. - but I must say I agree with Mel Wegman on the inherent unfairness of your lineups facing C or D pitchers - I also enjoy Mels antics with Doug Przymierski Doug Schuyler is a great organizer - I enjoyed your events from afar. Im big fan of the Saddleback Sharks and their manager Dan Velderrain In short - I get most of my baseball fix a few minutes each day from you guys Thanks
