I never thought I’d use the words “humorous” or “amusing” as adjectives for bass lines, but that’s exactly how I would describe Tina Weymouth’s brilliant bottom-end. I’ve been playing and studying her lines for months now and I find myself constantly chuckling to myself over her choice of notes. Songs like “And She Was” and “Stay Up Late”? I mean these lines she’s playing are just plain funny and oh so perfectly developed in relation to the lyrics and instrumentation. . Even on a tune like “Cities” Tina came up with these quirky little chromatic runs that make me just smile. She’s always been one of my favorite bassists, but not until I “got inside her head” did I realize how genius she really is. (I mean, come on, in Once in a Lifetime, she literally plays two notes alternately throughout this beast of a lengthy legendary tune, and they are two of the most brilliant notes ever conceived). What a thrill to get to be Tina Weymouth twice a week! https://youtube/watch?v=YgSVTdAtNYE
