I never thought id end up doing this but here goes - a weight loss tip (dear god, shoot me now). This will bore the pants off you if youre trim, but for those of us whove piled on a few too many pounds and have been told to lose it...here goes. 53, 5ft 7, 14 stone, 43 practically everywhere (I gather thats apple shaped). Doc says: get fit, lose weight or take the consequences (inc high blood pressure). Shes never one to pull a punch. So - have been going to gym, cutting down the calories. Lost a few pounds (5), but not enough. Why? Sob, Sob. Last month nothing. This week was a scientific experiment, dear chums. With me as G Pig. 1. Calculate your BMR (basic metabolic rate) here bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/. Be accurate with your height, age, weight. Now you know how many calories you need each day just to be. 2. If you are really sedentary x this by 1.2, If, like me at the moment, you do some activity (sports or gym) 1 - 3 times a week (dont count housework or gardening and dont lie about this bit) x by 1.375. The answer is how many calories you need to maintain your current weight/stay the same. Times by 7 and you have your maintenance calories for a week. Scoff this and not a lb will you lose. 3. 1 lb of fat = 3,500 calories. (Who knew?). Deduct 3,500 from your maintenance calories. Keep to this, spread over 7 days, and you should lose 1lb. (Tempted to cut out 7000 and lose 2lbs? - youd be eating next to nothing and it wont be pretty, plus youll be tired and pissed off). I aimed for a good bit of scoffing at the weekend (im not bonkers), say 1,700 and 2,000 on Sat and Sunday, which left me with about 1500 a day for the rest of the week Found it all quite easy, no faddy foods, eating normally, drinking wine, chomping the odd shortbread. Just getting to know how many calories are in stuff. I cook from scratch mostly so I can work it out. Weighed in today and lo and behold - lost 1lb! Now - recalculate with your new weight and do the same again. Each week you should lose a lb and each week youll have fewer calories to play with. But keep recalculating or youll stay the same. I have 29lbs to go, so if this does work, should do it by end of September. Science and maths - got to love it. Can also recommend Waitrose little pots of fresh soup. 240 cals for West Indian Chicken and absolutely no crap, minimal salt and sugar. Lunch taken care of. Want to know the calories in anything? Look on the packet or just Google calories in (whatever) and it tells you. Good luck.
