I nominated myself to do another 5 song challenge ... so here is 2 of 5 (1 of 5 being Maria Joaos and Mario Laginhas wonderful A Festa Dos Gnomos which I posted earlier) ... One of the most beautiful moments in music is the piano entry in the 2nd movement of Shostakovichs 2nd piano concerto. So I am choosing it as 2 of 5. Here is Shostakovich himself delivering what these days would be considered a remarkably direct and unsentimental performance back in 1958 (5 years after its composition). He does succumb somewhat to a syndrome common to composers performing their own work, in terms of a faster tempo than others might adopt, possibly due to over-familiarity with and closeness to the work. Nevertheless this is an amazing musical document.
