I often find folks aggravated by artists who stand up for the worth of their art or others art and am met with comments such as, just focus on your music ~ the reality is some people do not want to hear anything about the worth of art from an artist directly. Musicians not only focus on creating music, but also focus on selling music and protecting their stores from being raided...its the same with any business from creation to fulfillment of an order. If the art musicians made was not of interest, it would not be consumed by thousands or millions, and would not be making millionaires and billionaires out of tech industry moguls or music industry professionals. It would not be the soundtrack to every commercial, film, TV show, visual media, radio station, commercial store music, the car radio, the iPod, computer, stereo system....music is around all of us constantly. The bottom line is, music and art are incredibly valuable. Its been brought to my attention that art is not on the same level of importance as food and water...yet it is consumed in similar rapid ways...why? Because it brings emotional connection, happiness, a sense of belonging or understanding between humans. I consider food for the soul important alongside food for the body. It may be more pleasing to think of an artist as just a songbird or instrumental conduit without a voice other than the music created...but artists do have opinions as to how their art is consumed and what is fair business for them. As one artist after the next steps up against current streaming royalty rates...there is a real reason behind the movement. As I watch these artists come under fire for wanting fair compensation I realize that folks outside of the industry do not understand copyright, royalty structure or the cost of making music. These artists are not greedy for wanting compensation for their work...their work is being seriously devalued. The labels, publishers, songwriters, distributors, recording studios, and all involved in the business of music are fighting the same battle. Its not artist vs. the big bad label...its the worth of music vs. a free economy that tech is cashing out on while the public believes music is free. Its great financial gain from music not filtering to the music makers. Im proud of the artists standing up, I support them, I want music to sustain...before throwing stones at the artists speaking up...consider that art as a whole is in danger and that these artists would rather spend time creating...but they also have to spend time protecting their creations.
