"The Plantation Cemetery at Betton Hills was the burial ground for slaves and servants of the 19th century Betton Plantation...In 1945, Guy Winthrop began developing the present-day, 800-home Betton Hills neighborhood — and struck a deal in which the city would maintain the cemetery in exchange for the land that became Winthrop Park in Betton Hills...Only a handful of gravestones remain in the cemetery, where most graves were originally marked with wooden crosses."
