I often find myself in places where Im needed or at least can be helpful. Im not talking about major situations where Im called upon to perform CPR or life-saving surgery or offer up a kidney to someone who needs it! :) Im talking about little situations - small, anonymous things like my experience last night at Kaiser. My mom was having vascular surgery to try and improve the circulation in her legs. While waiting at the hospital, a teenage boy who was standing outside the surgery waiting area began talking to me. How are you? he asked me and, of course, I answered Im fine. You? Its been kind of a rough day he said. He went on to tell me within a span of just a minute or two that his mom was in surgery having her cancerous thyroid removed. He was obviously distraught and with very little prodding, he told me his mom was a single parent and that he was the oldest child at 17 years old. He talked and I listened. This young man had a lot on his mind and just needed to verbalize some of it to someone. Like I said, it was a relatively short conversation and when I had to leave and go back in the waiting room, I hugged him. I give good hugs! Theyre world famous! :) I dont even know his name but I feel connected to him. Ive been thinking about him ever since our encounter yesterday and he & his family will be in my prayers for a very long time. I hope his mom gets well and is able to enjoy her wonderful son for a very long time.
