I often get asked the question, how long does it take you to make a painting? Some might think that would be a simple question to ask. Its really a difficult question to answer. My painting process goes through a number of stages, and with each painting the stages can differ, depending on how one stage affects the next. Since my work the last few years is classified as 2Dimensional mixed media, I prepare my canvases by applying various materials to build textures, or strips of materials applied in various ways, as well as torn or cut geometric canvas pieces of varying sizes...still all this before any paint is applied. Doing this process could take a day or two depending on the size of the canvas. Then I put another coat of gesso to seal all the added materials. Once pleased with this process, I sit back and look at the canvas trying to decide what colors I want to begin with, and how I want the first applications to be applied...transparent washes?, opaque areas, combinations of these, how much water, do I tilt the canvas to let the paint run or drip? This is just the beginning...and a whole combination of different processed are involved before I finally stop and call the painting finished. I know that usually the person asking the question really doesnt want to sit and listen to my full answer, so I usually say something like, heck, Im really not sure. I just paint until I consider the painting finished. Thanks for asking.
