I often get questions about Maltodextrin in our products. It sounds so scary - like one of the things we are supposed to stay away from... And to be quite honest, in most processed foods, this is a true concern. Here is an explanation about what we use: Maltodextrin is usually associated with highly processed foods because you find it in many different foods and is used solely as an additive to change texture, appearance, etc. and as a cheap filler to increase profits. It can also be used as a sweetener without having to label sugar on the label. Also, maltodextrin in heavily processed foods is almost always genetically modified because it is derived from conventional corn which is almost always genetically modified. Wildtree does not use Maltodextrin in this manner. We strictly use Organic Maltodextrin as a flavor carrier for liquid ingredients and to disperse flavors evenly throughout a blend. The only way that we can take a flavor that is in liquid form (i.e. lime juice) and dry it into a powder is to spray the liquid onto a powder. This process is called spray drying. The powder that the liquid is sprayed onto is organic maltodextrin. Most of the maltodextrin we use is derived from organic rice however a couple of ingredients contain organic maltodextrin obtained from organic corn. Without the use of organic maltodextrin, we would not be able to bring flavors like lime, lemon, smoke, butter, wine, soy sauce and many other popular flavors into our culinary blends. As always, we pride ourselves in using the highest quality ingredients available in the market and will continue to do so.
