Lenten Devotional March 12 Text: Psalm 100 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Commemoration Day: Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome, 604 Did you know that the Lutheran church commemorates particular people throughout the year? Similar to the roll of saints in the Roman Catholic Church, Lutherans recognize people who have lived in exemplary service to further the Kingdom of God. Today we commemorate Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome from 590–604. Gregory has been known as “the Father of Christian Worship” because of his efforts in revising worship. Many of his revisions shaped the way we worship to this day. Gregorian chant, (similar to the liturgy setting we use during Lent) is also attributed to him. Protestant reformer John Calvin admired Gregory and declared him “the last good pope.” He is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers. To learn more about this extraordinary servant of God, join us for worship tonight at 7:00. Dinner will be served at 6:00 (were having lasagna -- yum!) Let us pray: As we hear of the spiritual journey of others, may we be inspired to leave a legacy of faith through our service. We pray in the name of the one who died on the cross for us. Amen.
