I posted this in response to a complaint about lazy people on SSI: Say you are a typical working stiff. You make $40K. You have a wife, a kid, and $500 a month in mortgage interest on the doublewide crackerbox castle. In that situation you pay virtually nothing, nada, zero, zilch in Federal Income Tax. Since you pay no income tax welfare costs you nothing, nada, zero. Your boss, the owner of the hypothetical company who pulls down $1,000,000 pays about $300K or so, and he is paying the cost of welfare. So if your co-worker suddenly feigns some kind of problem and goes on SSI that does not cost you anything. But - your boss (who is paying for that) is now shorthanded so you are in a better position to ask for a raise, get overtime, and you have better job security. This benefit cost you nothing, zero. And it does not adversely affect the capitalist class either because they have a vast surplus of capital, they have concentrated wealth over the last 30 years, and demand for goods and services by the peon class is needed to compell productive investment of that capital. Welfare means consumers who do not work, higher wages for workers, and greater aggregate demand to keep those workers busy. Get a clue.
