I posted this on todays 1/28/14 RTD article General Assembly briefing No General Assembly briefs for yesterday 1/27/14? The Senate Commerce & Labor Committee passed SB 459 Electric utility regulation; recovery of nuclear refueling costs. lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=141&typ=bil&val=sb459&submit=GO Here is the taped meeting: youtube/playlist?list=PL_kG76Xcvg_YrFgnZWrXE8E8Ptk0cvWzD Essentially its a bill to charge VA citizens ahead of time to build North Anna 3. What is terribly concerning is why would we want to put another reactor at North Anna on the fault line anyway? Please lets remember The company, then operating as Virginia Electric and Power Co., or Vepco, told the former Atomic Energy Commission in June 1973 that faulting of rock at the site is neither known nor suspected, even though the company knew about the existence of faulting at North Anna, the 1977 memo said. huffingtonpost/2011/11/06/north-anna-nuclear-earthquake_n_1078870.html And as a reminder the Aug 2011 earthquake exceeded the plants design basis. Its also putting the cart before the horse as the NRC has not even approved of the project and the new reactor doesnt even exist yet. Plus the NRCs Waste Confidence ruling review on what to do with the nuclear waste wont be ready until Oct 3,2014. So for the time being NO new licenses or extensions will be allowed. psr.org/nuclear-bailout/blog/waste-confidence-what-you.html The bigger question for Virginians is how much of this waste, that is toxic for thousands of years are we willing to store at North Anna as there is no where for it to go? We are being asked to not only pay for this project, but we will also have to pay for the forever storage of the waste AND be subject to all the risks associated with it. Where are the lessons learned from Fukushima, Chernobyl and TMI? timesdispatch/news/national-world/government-politics/japan-ex-leaders-join-calls-to-end-nuclear-power/article_a50f6aac-4b81-11e3-948c-0019bb30f31a.html The time is NOW to move away from nuclear ~ Contact your Reps!
