“I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I - TopicsExpress

“I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.” 1 Samuel 1:27-28 There is something in the DNA of parents that pushes them to ensure their children had more that they had growing up. Today, if a child isn’t in one or two sports during the week, taking some sort of music lesson, and is not associated with some good citizenship project, then some parents consider themselves to be failures. Most western children own the latest technical gadgets and have designer everything. They are not considered to be spoiled because still don’t have it all – the big car, the big home and the big debt. Parents push and push, and inadvertently push their children into the world that wants to use them for their own needs and have little or no concern for the child’s needs. Hannah, in deep anguish prayed that God would bless her with a child as she had been barren. Part of her prayer included a vow that if it were God’s will and she had a son, she would give him over to serve God all his life. God blessed Hannah with Samuel and when he was a child she took him to the temple to fulfil her vow. Samuel served in the temple under the mentorship of Eli. While a youngster, God spoke to Samuel and revealed information about Eli’s future forever more establishing him as Samuel the prophet. This world has enough hockey players and enough rock stars. There is an abundance of politicians and business executives. What God wants is more people to do His kingdom’s work. Have you considered releasing your children to Him? Would you be willing to give them over to God to do with as He desires? As a parent or grandparent, Aunt or Uncle, or even as a friend, would you pray that God uses our children in His service? Would you pray that they would desire to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth? Would you be willing to point them in the direction? It is a tough prayer to pray as Kingdom workers are not popular with the world nor are they considered to be successful people. Jesus told His disciples that “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few” (Matthew 9:37b). That was true when He first spoke those words and they continue to be true today. God has a plan for all of us. Will you pray that it is His plan, and not ours, which our children will pursue?
