I prefer nature as it is, and the less we meddle the better. However, to limit the amounts of roundups and further stockpiling of mustangs in holding at or beyond current capacity... In this shrinking wild west... and on limited acres per HMA (179 total Herd Management Areas in 10 western states), we do need to intervene but in the least disruptive way possible to the established and hard-earned/evolving family bands of horses in each HMA. The lesser of all the man-made evils, in terms of management, is the effective wild mare fertility control, PZP- It can also be remotely darted as they have been doing in the Pryor Mts. as one example. Its the least deadly, least costly, least invasive to established bands, yet effective for at least two years (94% efficacy). Simply needing reapplication every couple years. But it works for population suppression- better on the range management then captures-removals-stockpiles or our American Mustangs and Burros. Permanent sterilization should never be an option on wild mustangs, unless its a very aged mare with health issues, whos already genetically contributed to the gene pool.
