I promised my daughter-in-law a (very brief) dissertation on what the bible has to say about the concept of "luck" in response to several posts last week. Firstly - the bible does not acknowledge the concept at all. It never uses the term. What it *does* say is the following: 1. The Living God is sovereign over all things whatsoever that happen throughout creation (c.f. Ps. 115:3 ; Pr. 16:4 ; Dan. 4:34,35 ; Mt. 10:29) 2. What, by unbelievers, is commonly perceived as "bad luck" is in reality either: a) the discipline/training/instruction of God toward His people (James 1:2-4 ; 1Peter 1:3-9), or b) the judgment of God upon the ungodly (2Peter 2: 4-10 ; Jude 5-7) For these, the *only* (and certain) recourse, is to repent of sin and flee to the cross (Matthew 11:28 ; John 6:37) This is only a very short answer. I become more and more convinced that we believers (myself most of all) need to pay more careful attention to our speech patterns.
