I provided the below for someone to post on one of the Rottweiler FB pages I do not belong to (I actually tend to avoid most of them) because there were folks arguing that we dont have heart problems in Rottweilers, since the OFA has almost no affecteds listed. Feel free to share this statement, as long as you do so in its entirety OFA statistics for cardiac abnormalities are HIGHLY inaccurate because in about 90++% of the cases owners who obtain an abnormal result do NOT submit the results to OFA even though it is free to do so. It is equally rare for someone to submit an equivocal result. There sadly is no mandate that requires the submission of abnormal or equivocal results which in turn means that when looking at the affected rate in the breed you cannot consider the OFA database even remotely accurate. For passing hearts though it is a good source as long as you totally disregard all clearances performed by a Practitioner vet DO NOT use the OFA cardiac statistics to determine frequency of disease rate in ANY breed, especially breeds like the Rottweiler where a large portion of the breeder/owner population is in denial of the severity of the problem. I have been a magnet for people with Rottweilers with heart problems ever since I first published my info online in 2001. I get at MINIMUM 1 call or email a month (and many times lots more) from pet owners with dogs with cardiac problems whose breeders refuse to provide info or support to. If hearts were NOT a problem in our breed this would not be such an issue SAS is a giant problem in the breed, so much so the ADRK is beginning to consider adding heart clearances. We are also starting to see some other problems like mitral valve dysplasia and dialated cardiomyopathy for more info see my SAS page frontierrots/darlafd.htm and those with questions can email me from that page if they wish Diane Richardson NH, USA
