I quite literally woke up this morning to the news that Postmedia, the parent company of The Edmonton Journal and The Calgary Herald, is buying ALL of Sun Medias English-language weeklies, dailies, and digital properties, for the bargain-basement price of just over $300 million. I have no idea what this means, to be honest. Thats a heck of a lot of corporate concentration. Will the deal be approved by the government? Well, its hard to imagine the Harper govt turning it down. But it would also mean a major loss of diversity in Canadian journalism ownership, and potentially, a loss of diverse voices and perspectives. But in cities like Edmonton and Calgary, where the Sun competes head to head with a major Postmedia property, will the new company keep both papers in operation? Or merge them into one? I am still pinching myself to ensure Im awake. (Those of you reading this in Toronto and Montreal may have more answers than we have in the west....because its two hours later there!)
