I ran into a former student who just graduated college and is looking for a teaching job. My thoughts: A. I remember her 13th birthday because we had a field trip scheduled that day and we sang happy birthday to her on the bus. Now I feel ancient. B. We want our grads to stick around--but teaching jobs are scarce around here. This makes me sad. C. The state of education and the challenges new teachers face is overwhelming. I want to tell her to either: 1. Run or 2. Never have children because she will always feel like shes not doing either as well as she wants. D. Im incredibly proud of my former students. For a small rural school, we have an abundance of amazing, smart, funny, talented graduates. Shes too good to be waiting tables. Its so good to be reminded of the great kids instead of focusing on the tough ones. Happy Friday!
