I rarely post anything, but this issue is too important too ignore. I have always tried to support all of the student programs, whether my children participated in them or not- every student is different and deserves the opportunity to flourish in the areas that interest them. My children have been involved in music, sports, drama, SADD, peer support, science fairs, and many other activities. I hope all of my Bay Shore friends will rally behind this injustice. The Bay Shore Board of Education has decided to cut the Fall Musical Young Frankenstein, scheduled to be performed in November. The students have already auditioned and have been rehearsing, and are devastated by this decision. We are asking that all Bay Shore residents who care about our school district programs email the board members to voice their displeasure with the decision. Here is a sample letter that explains the situation further- please adapt it to your situation: Dear Bay Shore Board of Education, My name is _______________________________ and I am a resident of the Bay Shore Brightwaters community. I am writing to you to on behalf of the Bay Shore Drama program. I am a parent, alumni, student, supporter of the Bay Shore Drama program. We are asking that you as a board reconsider your decision to eliminate the fall drama club program and reinstate the current play, “Young Frankenstein”. Performing this show in the fall gives many more students the opportunity to be part of the drama program. It also allows additional students to be involved in the pit orchestra, which a drama would not allow. We understand your budgetary concerns for this school year. Due to those concerns, we propose that the budget that was set for this school year for a drama and musical remain, while allowing the Bay Shore Drama program to continue with “Young Frankenstein” and “Phantom” at no additional cost to the district. The Bay Shore Drama program will absorb all additional costs assumed with the production of a musical in the fall in order to keep the Bay Shore School District budget in tact. In addition, the Bay Shore Drama Program will go ahead as planned with “Phantom of the Opera” in the spring. The students have already been cast in “Young Frankenstein” and are already in rehearsals. They are also excited and prepared for their spring production of “Phantom of the Opera.” Every year, twice a year, the Bay Shore residents come together to see amazing award-winning productions. This year is no different and our community is anxiously awaiting both “Young Frankenstein” and “Phantom of the Opera.” The Bay Shore Drama program is one of the shining stars of the south shore. It has been called the “Heart of the Arts.” To eliminate this program would have a detrimental impact to the students of Bay Shore as well as the community.
