I rarely post on Facebook unless there is something I think those of you on my friend list will find useful. Todays topic is Ortho K (orthokeratology). For those of you who have never heard of this, its hard contacts (gas permeable lenses) that you wear at NIGHT that RESHAPE you lens while you sleep, giving you perfect vision during the day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthokeratology The reason I am mentioning it today is that I had my (somewhat) annual checkup today for Ortho K. As some of you know, I have been using these for almost 4 years now thanks to my buddy Dr. Kerry J Burrell, OD at Wyomissing Optopmetric wyo-opto/WyomissingOptometricCtr/ For me, this is awesome because I cant wear contacts and I cant get Lasik thanks to the sebaceous glands in my eyelids, which dont secrete enough oil for my tears. What I found out today that I didnt know and the reason for my post, is that, if you start wearing these early enough, you can PREVENT MYOPIA. Now, its too late for myself and all of you. However, your kids can benefit from this. Instead of getting glasses and continuously increasing the strength of the glasses every year, your child can wear these (at night) and their eyes will stop getting worse. In my opinion, that is pretty freakin cool. The optometrist I spoke with today told me his youngest patient is 4 years old ... and loves his Ortho K. Price wise you are looking at around $1600 for all of the testing and measuring and the first set of lenses. After that, depending on the office, $360/yr for biannual follow up and unlimited hydrogen peroxide solution for daily cleaning. To upgrade or replace a lens is usually around $300. Depending on your health plan, vision benefits cover a portion of the costs and are classed under contact lenses.
