I read in the Jamaican Gleaner on thursday how the Bank of Jamaica ( BOJ ) are making plans to allow banks in Jamaica to give greater access to the population to have access to the banking system. The article went on to say about a third of the population are unbanked and as a so called remedy to this the banks will allow third parties to provide some of the services normally only available at a bank. My question is why do we need banks to supervise and monitor our finances and even more so of what benefit is a bank to a poor man from west kingston who has little or no money in the first place. Ghetto people have their own systems in place for survival and it has nothing to do with a bank.As far as I can see it is a ploy to try and get more control over the poor and to monitor and undermine their system of survival and on top of that make money out of what little some of them posses. Whats more I believe the Jamaican government has been under pressure from the IMF to tighten its financial system in order to secure a loan from these colonial masters. Beware my people from these wolves who appear to make life easier with their overdrafts, credit and direct debit systems designed to draw you in and then devour you like a hungry shark only to leave you penniless and in eternal dept.
