I read or heard that Josef Stalin would not permit (you needed permission to do anything in Russia and Germany that time) civilians to be evacuated from Stalingrad as it was then named, during the Siege of Stalingrad for the reason of putting presssure on the Russian army to defend the city under aerial bombardment and motorised onslaughts from what was then a very fromidable German army. It was as if to put a moral obligation on the Russain army to protect the people of Stalingrad. It goes to show what political leaders will do for political expediency, and the total disregard for civilians when it comes to the crunch as regards matters of military strategy, whether they be gangster dons such as Stalin or leaders of states that are not categorised as rogue states. Of coourse Stalin has often been quoted as having said, the death of one person is a tragedy, the deaths of thousands is a stastistic. What is or is not a rogue state is defined by the United States of America. Trade sanctions are not imposed on respected or accepted states. There is no doubt that Palistinian civilians are being targetted by Israel to put pressure on Hamass as senator Norris has said in the Seanad debate, just as uncle Joe did in Stalingrad during the infamous siege which turned the tide of the Second World War irreversably against Germany. The Israeli gevernment can do this in the full knowledge that it will be politically viable, they are not their people, komrade Stalin did not worry about the outcome of political elections. I have no doubt that Israel was a left wing state as senator David Norris has said, and I am sure it was a center right state at some time. It has been infected by the Bush/Blair era, an infectiion that will remain for a ling time to come by the looks it.
