I read part of the meta-analysis last night associated with this - TopicsExpress

I read part of the meta-analysis last night associated with this article. They looked at a bunch of studies that were comparing lecture classrooms to active classrooms. The trend was that having an active classroom (including group work, collaboration, discussion, etc) promotes student achievement as compared to a fully lecture-based classroom (where the instructor is lecturing and fielding unplanned questions). I found the meta-analysis interesting...but also found myself thinking that this is both obvious and nothing new. However, describing the problem does not fix the problem. Fixing the problem would have to include saying...hey, so now that we have described the problem, here is a method that everyone can follow to fix the problem youtu.be/QTDQaaVWEzI. Though many times, instead of working on a solution, we simply argue over the semantics of how the problem was described...and wait for someone else to describe the problem in a different way so we can argue over that description. And around and around we go. Its easier to argue about semantics than change, I suppose. Lets spend our energy making change :)
