I read something interesting this morning. If youve never raised pigs before, youd be amazed how stinkin (no pun intended) fast they grow! They pack on the pounds in no time on sows milk - part of the reason I have left these piglets on their sow and have not removed them completely to bottle raise them on goats milk. Researching the butterfat content in pigs milk, I came across some information about reindeer milk. Did you know reindeer milk averages 22% butterfat?! A pigs milk is about 8.9% butterfat, goats milk varies but for Nubians it averages between 4-5% and a Guernsey cow is about 4.5%. Now, if I could just get a hold of a reindeer, Id could REALLY grow some piglets! Its no wonder their fat is so high, of course. Its cold (!) where reindeer live and babies need that rich milk. Interesting fact for the day, if you want fatty milk, get a reindeer! Happy Tuesday!
