I read something recently that made me a little sick and so much about this topic frustrates me . First off not every person who receives assistance is milking it . I paid into the system from the time I was 16 . I got assistance for the first time at 25 after I had my daughter. I didnt have assistance for about a year and a half of me working . Then I got married things were tight we applied again I got $116 a month for a family of three do not get me wrong and do not be misled my the reason for this post I was grateful to be able to have the $116 a month to help feed my family.this is the break down if you are frugal to what it takes to feed a family of 3 in a day week and month. Breakfast - cereal and milk juice - $15.96 a week this is two boxes of cereal milk and juice (store brand) $63.84 a month Lunch - milk or water sometimes lemonade , lunch meat , cheese , mustard ,mayo , bread, $37.95 a week $151.80 a month Dinner - chicken , veggies , rice or potatoes $70 a week $280 a month Snacks - veggies , fruit , fruit snack on occasion pop corn packages $3 a day $90 a month grand total every month spent on a family of 3 $585.74 this is food you cook take time and actually prepare.i do not get my nails done hair done eyebrows waxed. I do not have money for a new phone , brand new car or brand name body wash, I shop with coupons and I start Christmas shopping right after Christmas so I can afford what little Im able to give my family. I lost my job after letting them know I was pregnant .i have looked for work and not been successful I finally made the decision to go back to school. I do not receive unemployment any longer I did for like 3 months. I do get food stamps my husband is a chef and works in a restaurant getting about 30 hours a week. I took on babysitting and doing photography and face painting things I had done in the past we own a catering company which incorporates the face painting and photography for tax purposes. My point is I get assistance I am an American and I follow the rules when it comes to claiming. I will not feel guilty or ashamed of the fact that our price of living has gone up yet wages seem to stay the same. The fact that I look for work still being enrolled for school because if you think this us the way I want to live you Are CRAZY if you think I want to always be broke your wrong by the way I do not drive a brand new car its a 2000 Chevy astro van .so the next time you choose to judge someone perhaps you should walk a day in their shoes and know what its like to be them.
