I realize almost everyone is outside my family bubble, and most of you are outside my geographic bubble. My ferocious distaste for Branson Famous may seem odd. It may even seem like sour grapes. In 1959 my mothers father and uncles started the Baldknobbers. It was the first country show in Branson, and it helped establish the Branson you see today. My mother sang on the show. My dad parked cars for them. My sister joined the show along with various cousins. A big part of my identity and history is tied to that show. After my grandfather died my grandma decided the business was not her passion. Her portion of the show went to the family you may or may not have seen on Branson Famous. For better or worse, people still associate us with that show. I still associate myself with that show. I remember grandpa pulling me onto the stage when I was six to help him sign autographs. I remember him letting me sing into a mic he thought I didnt realize was off. I remember his pride at a job well done. I know my grandfather. He liked a crude joke and a poorly timed fart. He also separated his public and private persona. There is a story about him that is hilarious that I want to share to drive my point home, but out of respect I will not, even now, because he expected some things to be kept private. My problem with Branson Famous: I used to still be able to smile when I talked about my Grandpas role in establishing a tourist town. Sure, it is a weird place, but it was well intentioned and well received by its target audience. Now I just try to distance myself. I like Branson and this tone deaf rendering of it will do collateral damage to a great place. Sour grapes? I dont think so, but if youve seen the show you already know I have the not - self-aware gene.
