I really get pissed off at this mindless fear of biotechnology. Id - TopicsExpress

I really get pissed off at this mindless fear of biotechnology. Id rather have a genetically modified potato than I would either a pesticide-laden one, or a fungus-laden one, or else no potatoes at all. Perhaps they should study history a little, concentrating on the potato famine in Ireland, and the continuous fight farmers have had with various fungi, but I suppose that mindless fear interferes with the ability to study. There are numerous GMOs in existence, and I can envision how someone might worry about a particular one or two (not this one). I certainly look more closely at those that are designed to increase the use of agrochemicals or allow the use of more environmentally damaging agrochemicals. However, to oppose all GMOs as mindlessly as many do bespeaks of a total ignorance of biology, chemistry and genetics. To oppose all GMOs is not science, but religion. What irony it is to be using a fruit of the human intellect to communicate with people, yet deny that that same human intellect can be applied intelligently in the field of biotechnology. GMOs may be our only salvation from the worsening fight against, most concerning to me, fungi, particularly those endangering the very existence of cocoa, bananas, coffee, and even wheat crops. independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/wheat-rust-the-fungal-disease-that-threatens-to-destroy-the-world-crop-9271485.html
