***I really want to let everyone know about recent changes to the process in becoming a volunteer with the SPCA*** In FSJ you no longer need to complete a criminal record check in order to volunteer at the North Peace SPCA to walk dogs or cuddle cats ☺ The criminal record check proved to be a deterrent for many people and our shelter is desperate for volunteers, so with a little help from the wonderful Shaelan and the area rep, our branch was given permission to scratch that part of the application process!!! Thank goodness! I can count on my hands how many regular volunteers our SPCA has and quite frankly we are overwhelmed and need help. With a community as large as ours it is disheartening to see so few people actively involved in walking dogs, cuddling cats, attending our council meetings, helping with fundraising etc... It’s tough work emotionally and even physically (when you are the only dog walker to show up and there are 20 dogs who need to get out, away from the shelter so they can decompress and stretch their legs), BUT it truly is rewarding. Rewarding to know that you provided a little piece of sunshine to a shelter animal and gave them some love in an otherwise lonely and loveless existence. So, if you love animals I implore you to become a volunteer and help however you can. We are desperate for dog walkers and cat cuddlers. Currently our cat room is full of dozens and dozens cats and kittens who are yearning for some attention and there are always dogs who would love a good walk, maybe some fetch and definitely some pets. Even if all you have to spare is 30 minutes a week it would help. It would help more than you know.
